This session brought together more than 50 participants from education, health, community programs, and city, county, and state agencies for an interactive hour focused on clear, respectful communication with Spanish-speaking communities. The workshop introduced the idea of “caring for language,” explored the difference between access and equity, and provided practical tools that support dignity and clarity in everyday interactions.

Participants practiced warm greetings and helper phrases in Spanish, explored how to offer language preference, and learned strategies for pausing, checking intentions, and navigating moments when conversations become challenging. The session emphasized trauma-informed, culturally humble communication and encouraged shared responsibility for language access within organizations.

Participant reflections included themes such as:

  • Feeling more confident using simple phrases when supported by structure and practice

  • Realizing how much offering language choice can shift power and comfort

  • Appreciating the chance to practice in a low-pressure environment

  • Noticing how pausing before stepping in can reduce assumptions and increase clarity

  • Reflecting on the emotional and cognitive load placed on bilingual staff

Many attendees shared that the workshop made them more aware of their own communication habits and gave them tools that felt both accessible and immediately useful in outreach, front-desk communication, and daily interactions with families.

All participants received a sample bilingual workbook with phrases, reflections, and practice activities. A full 40-page version with extended vocabulary, scripts, case studies, and tools is available for individual or organizational purchase on our workbooks page.
